Artist Alton R. Lowe

Mildred Eliza Lowe (1896-1978) was born in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco to William Irvin Lowe and Elizabeth Alice Lowe. She was Alton's aunt, sister to his father Albert.

In 1916, she married Howell Ralph Lowe (1885-1960) son of Gideon Lowe and Esther Ann Lowe. After the death of Howell, she married Joseph Reginald Curry.

Alton Lowe recalls..

She made the plait and her sister, Hilma, sewed the plait into hats. Plaiting is taken from the thatch palm and in this case twelve thin strips from the palm [are] woven into a pattern. They can then be sewn together to create hats, purses, and baskets. There are about a dozen different patterns which can be used.
