Charles Mennon Harris left Green Turtle Cay as a young man to further his education in Nassau. He worked in Telecommunications before transferring to the General Post Office as a Junior Clerk. During that time he studied privately under Mr. Leviticus Adderley, now Head of St. Augustine's College, and later attended the Bahama School of Commerce. In December 1972, Mr. Harris was appointed Acting Postmaster General and after Independence in 1973, he succeeded the late Reverend Claude Saunders to that post. Mr. Harris received the Order of the British Empire on 12 September, 1979.
